Call to Action

As everything began to shut down in March of 2020, Nysics was tasked with assisting Faith Baptist Church in developing a Sunday service live stream— in 2 days. The call was made Friday evening, and FBC needed to be ready by that Sunday.

The team at Nysics had to move quickly to get production rolling. In the 2 days until live, Nysics had to accomplish these tasks:

Modify the in-person service to a format that works online
Schedule times for people to come in and safely record
Edit together the production
Created an intro logo to make the online production look professional

The Plan

Thankfully, Nysics had been working with FBC the 2 months prior to beef up their streaming solution. The infrastructure was in place to stream, but the content still needed to be developed.

Saturday — the day before going live — came, and the team went around Manchester and FBC to get some b-roll for the intro.

Intro Bumper

Originally, the Pastor had planned on pre-recording the sermon so that it could be edited together. A last minute change meant that the sermon would have to be done live. This proved to be a fun challenge for the team, as the worship set was recorded live, as were other elements of the service.

Because of this, the infrastructure at FBC had to change. The stream was originally set up to play back a video; the system now had to be modified to play a video back and play live content, complete with sound mixing, slide switching, and different camera angles.

The morning came, and after some network glitches, the stream went very smoothly. For a less-than 48 hour turnaround, everyone was stoked, especially the congregants who were able to watch the service right from their Facebook feed.

A school film documenting the journey of the Manchester, NH based band, Social Ghost as they experience the growing pains of success.

About the Video

Filming took place over the 2018 spring semester, so in order to ensure a cohesive look and feel, the group and I discussed what we wanted the film to look like. Taking into account how last minute some of the events were, and the technology we had, we decided to use equipment we already own, and to not worry too much about locking down shots. We also kept to an "interview as it happens" style to save time. Also, we had no idea what was going to happen, so this would keep us from having to re-shoot anything.

Due to the run-and-gun nature of the film, how our two cameras didn't quite match up, and how some shots were low-light and looked disgusting, we decided to embrace the "grunge" feel and make the whole film black-and-white. This set expectations low, but also turned our mistakes and seeming carelessness into ✨art ✨.

One thing I was dead set on, however, was ensuring that our audio sounded good. Bad video can be forgivable, but bad audio makes a production un-watchable. Alex has a shotgun mic attached to his camera at all times, and I borrowed a Zoom H4n to capture more specific audio.

SNHU Commencement 2018

SNHU's yearly commencement is a big deal. To create an experience students would never forget, Media Services was put in charge of designing the stage, lighting, and media assets.

BRAND

Creating the Brand

Creating a brand for Commencement requires creating a logo that can scale across video, web, and print. Additionally, different brands were considered for online students,

An example of a SNHU Commencement Logo concept utilizing spacing blocks and fonts based on the official SNHU brand guidelines.

Different ideas utilizing the SNHU 2018 seal and quill, the full SNHU word mark, and a vertical-style logo utilizing the seal. These options were discarded because, while they might work on one type of medium (web, film, and print, respectively), they would not scale.

Final Designs

The final logo, which is more minimal and scales across web, film, and print, and can be targeted for on-campus graduates and online graduates.

MOTION GRAPHICS

I was assigned the task of creating a graphics package that would give a "million dollar" experience. Inspiration for the style came from various award shows in order to give a regal, premium experience to help visualize the effort students put into earning all they worked for and accomplished.

LOWER THIRDS

In order to identify the speakers and presenters, I created a motion graphics template that could scale to any name or description length. These videos were then composited onto the live footage.

PRESENTATION

Media Services decided to step up their game this year to better showcase the media content their team worked hard to create, to create a more immersive experience for students, and to keep the audience entertained. One of the ways in which they did this was by creating a 7 screen video wall.

To help the team better target their content for these 7 screens, I created a salable After Effects template from scratch using math and AE expressions. This template allowed regular 16:9 videos to scale to the 129:64 ratio, while adding padding in-between each digital pillar in order to compensate for the space in between each video pillar on stage.

Birds-eye view of some of the behind-the-scenes of the template's inner-workings. Also featuring some screen-based customizations.The original footage is on top, the final result is below. Everything in the middle can be ignored by the artist.

The template also allowed for export of each pillar, of all the pillars combined with spacing, or all the pillars combined without spacing, depending on what worked best with the system we commissioned. Additionally, I set up the template so that, if desired, each screen could be manipulated independently, each side of the main screen could be independent or in-sync (this could create some cool mirroring effects), or the video could stretch across all the screens.

Examples of this are shown below, exported to a 1080p frame with the "pillars combined without spacing" template used:

FINAL RESULT

Overall, I'm extremely proud of the work I did, and even more proud of the team I worked with. None of this could have been possible without help from everyone else, and in reality I was a small cog in a bigger system. Everybody gave input, and we all worked together to create a magical experience for students as they graduated.

I was one of those students. It was really cool to experience the work I, and many of my coworkers, put into the event.

Since Adobe's updates to After Effects in late 2017, I, and the team at SNHU, have been exploring data-driven animation and visualization techniques to depict data in a modular, easy-to-customize way. This project gave us a great opportunity to visualize a small amount of data (with regards to the statistics at the beginning), and allowed for the department to work on creating a pipeline for bigger data-driven animation projects.

SNHU Instructive Flyers

The SNHU Media Services team tasked me with creating clear, simple instructional flyers on how to use presentation systems in the classroom.

The Request:

To make simple, readable instructions on how to use classroom equipment.

The Challenge:

Each document had to explain to the user how to properly use the equipment, while also being readable by non-technical individuals. As these were official school documents, they also had to subscribe to the school's design language.

Final Product

Planning

To get a sense of how to write up the instructions, I had to first experience the equipment and get a good sense of the process involved with each piece of technology (the projector system operated by the Extron panels, and the Ziggi document scanner), and explore the best use-cases for easiest operation.

Extron Panel

The typical use-case for Extron panel operation is using a piece of technology already connected to the system (such as the already connected computers provided by the school), with the second most popular use-case being the connection of an external device to the system, such as a laptop.

Ziggi Camera

Figuring out the best way to portray the Ziggi Document Camera was somewhat more of a challenge-- while the actual device is much simpler than the Extron panels in terms of infrastructure, the functions available to end-users are greater in number and control. As such, I needed to depict the camera's abilities, how to project the image, and best practices for projecting information, all on one page.

Design

When designing instructions, or any other piece of information, I try to depict something as simple as I can and as clearly as I can: I feel that this prevents misunderstandings and clears confusing. Especially with technical instructions, clarity and simplicity allow users with varying technical backgrounds to get the information they need quickly, and then move on.This aspect of my design, in tandem with the requirement of fitting information on one page, lead me to create a three-panel layout (I'm a big fan of the "rule of threes"), depicting less information if more was unnecessary.

Luckily, the way SNHU set up the Extron panels in each classroom made operations fairly easy to use, and relatively self-explanatory. As such, use cases were split up like so: for the first use case, I felt that a single section containing an expounded description of each function on the Extron panel was sufficient.

For the second use-case, I designed a simple diagram in Illustrator to depict how one would connect an external device to the system.A laptop was used to depict this (designed based off of the laptops SNHU provides to their faculty), as it is the most popular external device; however, any HDMI-capable device could be used.

As for the Ziggi camera, its complexities gave me the opportunity to explore the most effective way of portraying the device on a single page. After using the device and testing its use cases, I split the document into three sections: hardware, software, and execution. The sections were split in this way as each category housed its own unique traits and quirks.

Hardware operations explored the use of the device on a physical level, software operations explained how to launch the companion software in Windows 10 (compensating for any weird images in which the software shortcut was not on the desktop) and how to use the features that I thought most useful to the camera, and the execution panel provided troubleshooting tips for over-exposed or out-of-focus documents.Contact information was not provided, as that information was already on the Extron flyer, which would already be present in each classroom the document camera was located in.

Final Thoughts

To keep in line with SNHU's design guidelines, the pallet was based off of SNHU's gold and royal blue school colors. From there, I created a light and a dark shade of the blue to distinguish each section from the next. The font used was the school's Franklin Gothic Demi Condensed.

SNHU COCE LEADS

SNHU has an annual conference where online students and students on campus come together and connect with each other. Called COCE Leads, the SNHU Media Services team was tasked with filming the event and creating a short promo.

The team at Nysics helped film the project and also provided the motion graphics.

Originally, the project was supposed to be a simple interview montage advertising the event to online students. When the team began this project, the name of the conference was SNHU Connect. Part-way through, however, the name changed to COCE LEADS, and the video grew in scale.

Snak Online

Snak Online was a brand experiment created by No Silence Media.

Overview

It was our goal to create a news aggregation site built on Wordpress, with the twist that articles could be organized by how long it takes to read them. The timing of the articles would be categorized by how long it might take someone to eat a snack, such as an apple. Hence the brand "Snak."

Brand

The idea of the website was customizable content for people to consume during their free time, however long they might have. We wanted this to be depicted through different snacks, which we decided based on types of snacks people usually have, and how long people might take to consume them. This was based on, uh, lots of anecdotal testing.

To make the icon and the logo, we decided on a more "modern" look, with some quirky and fun aspects mixed in.

We also made the "k" in the logo the "basket" that holds the snacks in the icon. This was done with intention of animating the logo, which was never done.

We also created some fun wallpapers for the brand:

It's a reading app; of course there's a "dark mode!"

Mobile Website

We wanted the website to be a pleasant experience that made it easy to view content, share it, and find similar content. The purpose of the website was to provide an excellent reading experience.

The headline feature of the site was content that can scale to the user's free time. As such, we provided a timeline interface to better filter down content matching the time.

The home page

The timeline was placed prominently near the bottom of the screen to make it easy to access for people just browsing with their thumb. Likewise, the rest of the interface could be navigated using gestures (left, right, up, down) to reduce finger strain.

Article View

Top of the article, showcasing the article's featured image.

An example of what inline images and embedded advertising would look like. Obviously the ad is not real.

Continuing to scroll at the end of the article would navigate the user to the next article.

A lot of this design was inspired by Microsoft's Metro design language, a personal favorite of mine.

Conclusions

The project was never finished, and No Silence Media moved onto other projects. However, this is still one of my favorite explorations in User Interface design, and I hope to design something like this in the future.

No Silence Media was tasked with creating product videos for AQYR's Typhoon and ThinPack series of satellites.

AQYR was proud of how simple and easy-to-use their products were—as a result, we decided to style the videos off of another company who prides themselves on simplicity, Apple. We designed our product shots to showcase each device's design, and used motion graphics to visualize the simplicity of the devices.

Creating the UI

AQYR wasn't just proud the simplicity of their hardware, but also of their software. Each product featured a simple LCD display, and an internal web server to allow users to log in remotely to control the device.

In order to portray the device's simplicity, I took reference images of their UI and re-created it in After Effects. This UI was completely functional too; I set it up so that the video editor could actually "use" it, allowing us to make quick changes to the video without having to constantly re-make the UI.
